    Chidambaram wants fundamental rights protected

P Chidambaram has found himself in the news a lot lately, and not for his usual rhetoric challenging the government’s status quo. His son Karti was served with a summons and the CBI led searches in his private residence in relation to a few cases. Now P Chidambaram is stating that the searches made were ‘vexatious’ and that the way the questioning and the method in which the CBI and the EB have been carrying out their searches and questioning is perhaps a part of a political vendetta meant to personally target him.

He states that he and his son have always maintained they are innocent of any wrongdoing in these cases and that he was now seeking the Supreme Courts protection to prohibit any further harassment of either himself or any other family member, asking the Court to protect his fundamental rights to dignity and privacy.

He states that there has been constant influx of false and misleading news that has been leaked to media channels in connection with the ‘farcical investigation’ being carried out against him and his own. That these actions were now amounting to an violation of his rights under the Constitution.

He has applied for a writ of prohibition, stating that these agencies were not to bother him or his family anymore with their repeated harassment, another writ or order for mandamus directing that the agencies were to comply with the law and the Constitution.

He has also stated that the method and the manner in which the investigation is being carried out are without jurisdiction, and a clear abuse of power by the authorities. He has prayed in his petition that there be an order or direction issued that would not prevent him or his son from pursuing lawful occupation or business as allowed under the Constitution.
