Registration of a marriage can prove to be vital in protecting the legal rights of women and children in a marriage. In fact the importance of marriage registration is so much that the Supreme Court has made it compulsory register a marriage.

Registration of marriage can also come handy to acquire some key legal documents such as a PAN Card, Passport or VISA. So it is always a better idea to register your marriage.

A marriage certificate is a legal document that serves as an evidence of a valid marriage that has taken place between a bride and a groom. Marriage registration in India can turn out to be a simple and easy task if you know the correct procedure.

The basic requirements to obtain a marriage certificate in India

     ·   To obtain a valid marriage certificate it is necessary that a marriage has taken place legally. This means that the bride must be above the age of 18 while the groom must be above the age of 21 when the marriage took place.

     ·   The UID Number i.e. Aadhar Card is a crucial document required to register a marriage in India and thus if the Aadhar card is unavailable for any of the bride, groom or the witness, the marriage certificate application might get rejected. So it is highly advisable to apply for the Aadhar card before the Marriage registration process is initiated.

Documents required to obtain a marriage certificate in India

Once both the basic requirements are fulfilled, the following documents shall be required to be attached with the application:

       ·  Identity proof – Bride, Groom, and Witness

Ø  Aadhar Card / PAN Card / Ration Card with Photograph / Voter ID Card / Passport / Driving License /Any other Government Recognized Document

       ·  Date of Birth Proof – Bride, Groom, and Witness

Ø  Aadhar Card (Verified DOB) / Passport /Driving License /Nursing home / Hospital Report / SSC from the recognized board by Government of India / Birth Certificate / Certificate from School signed by Principal on School Letter Head CMO / Doctor Report

       ·  Address Proof Before Marriage for both Bride and Groom

Ø  Aadhar Card / Voter ID Card/ Driving License/ Passport/ Ration Card/ Electricity Bill/ Water Bill/ Gas Bill/ Telephone Bill/ Rent Agreement/ Bank Passbook/ Any other government issued document

       ·   Address Proof After Marriage for both Bride and Groom

Ø  Aadhar Card / Voter ID Card/ Driving License/ Passport/ Ration Card/ Electricity Bill/ Water Bill/ Gas Bill/ Telephone Bill/ Rent Agreement/ Bank Passbook/ Any other government issued document

       ·  One Passport size Coloured Photograph of the Beneficiary

In addition to the above-mentioned documents, an affidavit must also be executed by the bride and groom as per the relevant formats.

The Procedure of Online Marriage Registration in India

Once all the relevant documents are ready you will have to make an appointment which can either be done online or by visiting the court. For online appointments the website of the Revenue Dept. of Delhi can be visited.
